USM COOSA According to Cherokee County (Alabama) History an August 10, 1842, article in the Macon Georgia messenger reported that a steam boat was launched at Rome, Georgia on the 20 of July to ply the waters between Rome and the head of the falls 50 to 60 miles distant from Wetumpka. There are other references to a Roman building this boat in speculation that the mainline of the railway would be routed through Rome. When the mainline was built connecting Marthasville (later called Atlanta) and Chattanooga the builder expressed his disappointment by sinking his boat.
