ROME AREA HISTORY MUSEUM

By LaVelle Chubb

Northwest Georgia History, Ltd., is a private, nonprofit organization promoting cultural and historical awareness and appreciation of Rome. The institutes’ mission is to develop, operate and continually enhance Rome’s area history. It is also equipped to further the conscience and education of children and adults in our region. The museum will definitely give you “A reflection of the past… A view of the future.”

The institute was started by a group of men and women who proposed to provide cultural and educational enrichment to residents of and visitors to Northwest Georgia by offering a visual, chronological history of the area. The museum contains unique displays on such varied subjects as that of the exploration by the first Europeans, the history of Rome City schools, and some of the first doctors and nurses as well as the founding of the city of Rome. The museum is full of exciting historical events that you would enjoy learning about. It also includes lectures and visiting displays as well as mobile exhibits. The museum will not only increase the residents' understanding of this region’s historical view, but will also broaden the area's appeal to all visitors and surrounding areas.

The museum offers expanded tour programs, where we separate all age groups from Pre-K through fifth grade. For example, a Pre-K class might learn about lifestyles of the past through the churning of butter and through hearing stories of then and now. Fifth graders might see and hear about the battles of WWII from those who were there. The museum can accommodate a maximum of 30 students at a time. The number of activities available to students increases with the amount of time allocated. Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance -- a month for special programs. Junior and high school students are encouraged to tour the museum for history and information for history projects and book reports.  Once you enter the museum you’ll be amazed at what you don’t know.
